Is it proper to have a going away party as a potluck?

I'm having a going away party and I'm having it as a potluck. However I've gotton some feedback that that's not really kosher to do. I'm paying the banquet hall and the DJ (not cheap) so I don't see anything wrong with asking people to bring a dish. But what do you think? Is this tacky?
