Truck full of birds and a dodgy axle?

physics teacher at school posed this one but never gave the answer! A truck with a dodgy axle is transporting birds, if they all sit on the floor the axle will snap, so the driver periodically bangs on the roof so the birds all take flight. But does this help as the air displaced by their flapping wings will all hit the floor anyway?
