Natures names with nicknames?

I'm trying to help my brother think up names for his two new dogs. They're both Alaskan malamutes, one girl and one boy. He's in the habit of giving his pets names based on elements of nature, such as trees, landforms, flowers, gems, weather, etc. Names like this would be super helpful, with the more unique ones being even better (we've already seen all the basic names like Clover, Rain, and Thunder). What would be the most helpful is a nature based name that also has a nickname. The best example I can think of is Redwood,with the nickname Red. So, any ideas?
