Fern suitable for amphibian tank?

I want small ferns for my newt tank. I'm not sure if you can get "small" ferns though. The roots would be in the water, about a centimeter of the plant too, unless this isn't possible, then I'll have to plant them somehow. Would moss be a suitable substrate for them?
